Sweet Braided Bread
June 11th, 2011 in Desserts by Julia VolhinaI am used to call this kind of braid sweet bread Hala (Хала in russian), however when I was preparing to write this recipe and did a bit of research to make sure I get name right in english, I discovered that real Challah (Hala) doesn’t contain dairy.
Considering this recipe have butter and milk and eggs in it, I didn’t risk to call in challah. After all it is a sweet braid yeast based sourdough bread.
It tastes good by itself and even better with a cup of yogurt or cultured milk (kefir or buttermilk).
Fried Lamb Dumplings (Chebureki)
May 21st, 2011 in Lamb, Main Dishes by Julia VolhinaThis is another recipe from my USSR-ian childhood. It takes a bit of time and inspiration to cook these from scratch, but it totally worth it.
Even though it is time consuming, with a bit of organization it can be a fun activity to do for whole family together.
I never been a big fan of lamb meat, but these dumplings taste the best made of it. However you can always substitute equal amount of beef and pork mix for lamb meat.
Banana Milkshake (Fruit Milkshake)
September 26th, 2009 in Beverages, Non-alcoholic by Julia VolhinaEven though the title says this is recipe for Banana Milkshake, this very simple recipe can be used to prepare pretty much any kind of fruit milkshake – just replace bananas with strawberry or raspberries and vanilla ice-cream with any kind of ice cream you like and enjoy your very own taste of a milkshake.
I should also mention what milk and ice-cream (main ingredients of a milkshake) are good sources of calcium, which is an important component of a healthy diet. It is especially for children. Which makes milkshakes good drinks for kids: not only is it tasty so they love it, but also is nutritious.
So, whatever your goal is – to make sure your kid gets the needed amount of calcium or to remind yourself about the times when you were a kid – make a milkshake (it is easy)!
Moussakas (Greek Eggplant Casserole)
July 25th, 2009 in Beef, Main Dishes by Julia VolhinaIn Greek cuisine, moussakas (moussaka, musakka) is a layered casserole made of vegetables (eggplant as a main ingredient) and minced meat.
It takes a bit of time and require some coordination in order to make it. But even if you spend a lot of time preparing moussakas, it totally worth it! It is great dish, and it tastes good served as hot as well as cold.
Tzatziki is good addition for Moussakas Casserole.
